History of the Akal Takht
Without the aid of a worker or an architect, Guru Hargobind Ji, Bhai Gurdas Ji, and Baba Buddha Ji constructed the structure themselves. To establish the foundation for the Harmandir Sahib, excavation was done at the Amrit-Sarovar, where the raised mound of soil was created.
During Operation Bluestar, the Takht sustained damage. Later, the Indian government rebuilt the building and named it Sarkari Takht.

Architecture of the Akal Takht
In defiance of Emperor Jahangir, the elevated platform, initially 9 feet tall, was increased to its current height of 12 feet. Ranjit Singh expanded the building by three levels and decorated the Takht in gold.
The building currently has five stories: a gold-leafed dome, gilded interiors, and exquisitely painted wall panels. It is also inlaid with marble.
Here, remnants of lime plaster were decorated with flower designs in the Mughal style. The structure has been compared to Venice's Piazza Saint Marco, where the Doge's Palace looks out onto the Grand Canal.
In the open courtyard, Akal Takht is situated similarly in front of the Darshani Deori.
